  • MP Andris Berzins: non-citizens could be granted voting rights in municipal elections only after the number of non-citizens in the country will decrease to a minimum
  • Chas reports about a conference “Russian Language: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow” held in Daugavpils
  • NSS has publicised a statement dissociating itself from neo-Nazi Andris Jordans

In an interview with Chas, the MP, Head of the Saeima’s Foreign Affairs Committee Andris Berzins (Latvia’s Way/ Latvia’s First party) has stated that non-citizens could be granted voting rights in municipal elections only after the number of non-citizens in the country will decrease to a minimum. Mr. Berzins considers that if non-citizens are granted voting rights now they would lose any motivation to naturalise.

Chas reports about a conference “Russian Language: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow” held in Daugavpils (city in the Eastern part of Latvia) by the Pomorian Old Orthodox Church of Latvia and Orthodox Church of Latvia. Participants of the conference have discussed positions of Russian language in the contemporary society.

The national radical organisation “National Power Union” (NSS in its Latvian acronym) has publicised a statement on neo-Nazi Andris Jordans who recently was sentenced to one year and six months of imprisonment for statements inciting to ethnic hatred. The NSS declared that it dissociates itself from Andris Jordans. According to the NSS, although he joined the organisation in 2005 he was not an active member of the NSS. The NSS condemns the statements made by Jordans. However, the NSS considers that his sentence is inadequately harsh. As reported, Andris Jordans has stated at a public discussion in February 2007 that Jews and Roma people are ‘non-humans’ and it would be preferable to exterminate them. Latvijas Avize
