  • Famous Latvian lawyer Andris Grutups: unity of Latvian society should be based only on ethnic Latvian culture and Latvianisation
  • Vesti Segodnya prints an interview with the head of the Naturalisation Board Eizenija Aldermane

Famous Latvian lawyer Andris Grutups has stated that unity of Latvian society should be based only on ethnic Latvian culture and Latvianisation. Mr. Grutups believes that so far, Latvianisation in Latvia is hindered by ideology of multiculturalism and priority of universal values over all other values. Vesti Segodnya

Vesti Segodnya prints an interview with the head of the Naturalisation Board Eizenija Aldermane. According to Mrs. Aldermane, there are 370, 000 non-citizens in Latvia. About one-third of non-citizens are over 61 years old, while one-fourth are under 18 years old. Mrs. Aldermane believes that those who did not receive Latvian citizenship so far do not need it. Eizenija Aldermane also believes that Latvia politically is not ready to grant non-citizens voting rights in municipal elections. Mrs. Aldermane states that if persons are not proficient in Latvian language they are not able to make their own choice and will fulfil somebody else’s will.
