  • Latvian officials criticize event devoted to the entry of Nazi troops in Riga on 1 July 1941 planned to be held today

The President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers stated that celebration of the day when Nazi troops entered Riga is an insult to independent country. The President reminded that Nazi troops exterminated almost whole Jewish community in Latvia, established concentration camps and conducted repressions against civil residents. The event planned to be held by radicals today in the centre of Riga is criticized also by the Prime Minister, Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Interior. The Mayor of the Riga City Council Nils Usakovs stated that municipal police will immediately stop the event if it will show any signs of glorification of Nazism, racism, anti-Semitism or insult to war victims.
